Description

We were confident that individuals would want to rent arcade games by the month, but truth be toldwe had no idea how to work on them. Before we knew that our launch was a month away and we’d managed to accumulate about 100 matches, but only 10 of them worked!
We knew enough to refurbish a good chunk of those matches, but we kept hitting the identical symptom over and over again. All of our screens will display a scrambled image on the monitor. It was super frustrating because we had no clue how to repair it. We almost missed our launch, but we finally clued in on what was causing our probablem when we learned about monitor sync 101 and recognized that they occasionally have to be hooked up differently depending on the game. On this day, we have to have turned on at least 20 games, we had put a good deal of hard work into, but had been missing this final piece of the puzzle so as to be able to play them. This tiny chunk of understanding, gave us the games we all needed to begin and was enough to keep us motivated to continue learning how to fix issues.
Five years later, I spend more time studying arcade fix, I spent studying in college and the instruction continues to pay off.
For the previous few years, we’ve had an average bug that’s crept into our fleet. After we measured the voltage running the matches, we’d consistently see a 0.2 to 0.5 drop from the 5V voltage and could not really figure out why the PCB board seemed to suck up power.
To solve the symptom, we would boost the power source to run hot and that would be helpful for another 3 to six months until the electricity supplies would burn out. After running into this mystery a couple of times, we began to put the games into deep storage until we can find out why they all kept failing. Because we assumed, it was being caused by bad circuit boards trying to draw too much energy, we overlooked something a lot more evident.
After cleansing the chips, it might sometimes help, but this insect has managed to brick at 20 of our matches. Well today, our Mortal Kombat 2 started to exhibit the very same symptoms and quite honestly if we pull that one from the fleet, our customers will riot, so that I sat down to get into the origin of the case of the fall in voltage.
To do this I took my voltage meter, measured the electricity at the power source and then began tracing the 5V line and measuring wherever I could touch cable. When I measured the electricity before it went into the edge connector, I noticed the voltage had dropped. I suspected the connector between the cable and the power supply. The moment I crimped over the end of the lineup to place on a brand new one, I immediately saw what my problem was.
We love getting a good deal and I’d be happy to bet you a quarter, so which you can’t find a better bargain on the jamma harnesses that we purchase. Unfortunately, it looks like we may have gotten exactly what we paid for them.
From the exterior, the harness looks as though it uses a thick 18 gauge wire to conduct the power to the board. That’s a whole lot of metal to conduct a small amount of voltage. It is part of why I never suspected that it was our offender.
As soon as you start this up though, it is possible to see that from the exterior it looks 18 gauge, but on the inside it is short quite a bit of metal. The solution was simple, run a thicker cable in the power supply to the tap and Voila!
While this easy bug should have been seen sooner and has caused us a lot of headaches, it’s also incredibly exciting to work out the source of our difficulty and to know that with very little work, we’ve got another 20 amazing matches back on our website. Learning how to fix arcade games hasn’t been simple and your schooling never ends, but each time you solve a puzzle, the next game gets easier and easier to repair.
Hopefully, other men and women who’ve run into similar trouble, can save the same aggravation by A.) double assessing the wire you’re using when you can not get your voltage to travel directly from your power source into a circuit boards and B.) paying only a little bit better quality jamma harnesses.
